Every Child Belongs at Best Friend’s

At Best Friend’s Early Learning Center, inclusion isn’t a separate program — it’s part of everything we do. Each child comes to us with their own story, strengths, and way of seeing the world. We believe learning is co-created through connection, curiosity, and care. Our classrooms are built on dialogue — between teachers, children, and families — where everyone learns from one another and every child feels valued.

What Inclusion Means to Us

Inclusion at Best Friend’s means creating an environment where every child can participate, contribute, and grow — regardless of ability, background, or learning style. We view children not as passive learners, but as active co-creators of knowledge. Teachers guide and learn alongside children, engaging in a shared process of discovery that honors each child’s voice, culture, and potential.

Inspired by the ideas of educator Paulo Freire, we believe in teaching through love, respect, and dialogue — not direction alone. Rather than the traditional banking model of education, where teachers deposit information, we embrace a co-creative model where teachers and students build knowledge together. This philosophy shapes classrooms where learning reflects the languages, cultures, and lived experiences of every family in our care.

This approach is rooted in Freire’s belief that true learning requires dialogue grounded in profound love — love for people, for community, and for the world. As explored in Profound Love and Dialogue: Paulo Freire and Liberation Education, Freire viewed love not as sentiment, but as the courage to listen, affirm, and learn alongside others. That same spirit guides our classrooms, where teachers and children grow together through empathy, respect, and shared discovery.

Language as a Bridge to Culture

Our school is built on the belief that language is a bridge to culture. Each word a child learns carries the stories, songs, and traditions of the people who speak it. That’s why our classrooms embrace four languages — English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Haitian Creole — representing the diverse communities we serve.

In Haitian culture, school is more than a place to learn; it’s a community built on respect, resilience, and the belief that education transforms lives. Children grow up understanding the value of hard work, mutual support, and pride in learning, even when resources are limited.

At Best Friend’s, we carry that same spirit by creating an environment where children learn through cooperation, curiosity, and cultural appreciation. Our approach reflects both Haitian values and the Brazilian-inspired pedagogy that centers on relationships, joy, and exploration. Through songs, storytelling, and group experiences, we nurture independence, kindness, and a deep love for learning — promoting values that mirror the heart of Haitian education and the warmth of Brazilian culture.

Together, these cultural influences help us celebrate the beauty of diversity while fostering a shared sense of belonging and purpose in our school community.

How We Support Every Learner

Every classroom at Best Friend’s is designed to meet children where they are. Our teachers adapt lessons, routines, and materials to ensure that all children — including those with ADHD, Autism, sensory processing differences, or other learning needs — can fully engage and thrive.

Support may include:

  • Flexible environments and calming spaces for focus and comfort.

  • Multi-sensory lessons using sound, movement, and visuals.

  • Collaboration with Early Intervention specialists and local educators for consistency and progress.

  • Instruction that values each child’s language and culture as central to their learning experience.

These supports are thoughtful and individualized — allowing every child to feel successful, confident, and included.

Collaboration with Families & Specialists

We believe that families are partners in education. Together, we share insights, set goals, and celebrate milestones. Our teachers maintain open communication through daily updates, family meetings, and shared planning, ensuring that care and learning align both at home and in the classroom.

When additional support is needed, we collaborate with therapists, Early Intervention, and local public school programs. This partnership ensures continuity, consistency, and the best possible outcomes for every child.

An Environment Built for Belonging

From morning hellos to shared meals, inclusion is part of our daily rhythm. Children hear their home languages celebrated, see their cultures reflected in books and songs, and experience learning that honors who they are. Our classrooms are joyful, multilingual, and community-centered — places where children learn to respect one another, celebrate differences, and feel proud of where they come from.

Our Promise

At Best Friend’s Early Learning Center, every child belongs, every language matters, and every culture is celebrated. Through co-creative learning, empathy, and the joy of shared experience, we prepare children to see themselves — and each other — as capable, valued, and connected members of a diverse world.
